2024 Recap
Liberty’s season went off the rails quickly. Freshman quarterback Jaxson Workman suffered an injury in the second game of the season, forcing him to miss half the year. That forced the Raiders to shuffle their lineup, inserting Chase Shea at QB.
Shea filled in admirably, throwing for 515 yards but threw nine interceptions. Workman, who registered five games, threw for 743 yards and rushed for 94.
In the end the Raiders never found their footing, finishing 3-7.
2025 Outlook
With an experienced offensive line and several dynamic skill players, the Raiders are poised to take a step and compete for a playoff spot. Workman returns at the quarterback spot as a true dual-threat player, capable of running and throwing.
“The last three games went pretty well for (Jaxson),” Liberty head coach Mark Workman said. “We didn’t win but individually he threw the ball well.”
Workman wasn’t the only loss as Colton Tolliver, a standout receiver, also suffered a season-ending injury.
“Colton was out all year, all three sports,” Coach Workman said. “He’s back and he juts had a really good scrimmage against Meadow Bridge. He had some good 7-on-7s so the sky is the limit for him.”
Joining Workman in the backfield will be standout back Isaac Williams who rushed for 688 yards and six scores.
“He was on pace for 1,000 yards last year and got a concussion and missed the last game,” Workman said. “He works hard and understands the game of football and understands what we need in a quarterback.”
The group of returning skill players provides experience for the Raiders. It also provides versatility.
With standout athletes in all phases, Workman likes the balance he’ll have on offense, a difference from years past. His 2020 squad was able to go to the air more while his 2021 team relied on a single wing offense.
“We’re not going to be too heavy on the ground and we’re not going to be too heavy on the pass,” Workman said. “We’re going to take what the defense gives us. Some games that might count us as run heavy and some games we’ll move it more in the passing attack. We’re just going to take what we’re given.”
Anchoring the offense will be an experienced offensive line. With several multi-year starters in the fray, Workman feels good about the trenches and how they’ll create for what he believes is a dynamic offense.
“We haven’t had a great three years but these kids that are seniors now, two of them have started on the offensive line since they were freshmen and sophomores,” Workman said. “The other three kids we have up front, they start as freshmen and sophomores so now I’ve got two seniors and three juniors up front. They’ve gotten stronger and they’re more mature. Their football IQ is better.
“We think we have something so now it’s just them getting it in their mind. We talk to them all the time about being dogs. They can be big and strong but unless they’ve got that mentality we can’t do anything for them. We’ll see what kind of dogs they are Friday night against Doddridge County.”
The only changes to Liberty’s schedule are the losses of Poca and Mingo Central in favor of Doddridge County, who the Raiders open with on Friday, August. 29, and Mingo Central in favor of Greenbrier West.
