Spencer – Brock Parker blocked Williamstown’s go-ahead 37-yard field goal attempt with nine seconds to go, preserving a 26-25 James Monroe victory Saturday afternoon at Roane County High School in Spencer.
The Mavericks roared out to a 19-0 lead in the second quarter on a touchdown pass from Ryan Mann to Kadyn Hines and a pair of scoring runs – a 62-yarder by Parker and a 1-yard plunge by Mann.
Williamstown responded with four consecutive touchdown to take the lead 25-19 in the fourth quarter with 5:32 left to go.
Mann capped his day with 2:28 left in the game, connecting with Bryce Gardinier on a 45-yard screen pass for a touchd0wn on third-and-7.
Mann finished the game 11-of-14 passing for 186 yards with two touchdown passes, adding 56 yards rushing and another score. Kadyn Hines was his top target, hauling in six passes for 87 yards and a score. Parker led the ground attack with 77 yards and a touchdown on eight totes.
James Monroe (1-0) will travel to Shady Spring next week.
