New Richmond – Wyoming East’s bats came alive in the fourth and fifth innings as the Warriors poured in nine runs in those two frames to secure an 11-1 mercy-rule victory over James Monroe Monday in the Class AA Region 3 championship series opener.
With the victory East needs just one more win to secure a spot in next week’s state tournament while James Monroe needs to win the next two in the best-of-3 series.
Zach Hunt led the way at the plate with three hits while driving in a trio of runs. Gaige Cooper did the honors on the mercy rule hit, blasting a double with the bases loaded to push across the final two runs.
Jaeden Lester led the way on the mound for the Warriors with 11 strikeouts in just five innings, allowing just three hits.
Kadyn Hines had one of James Monroe’s three hits in the loss and its only RBI with a. triple.
The series will shift to Lindside on Tuesday night.
