No. 1 Spring Valley built a double-digit lead over No. 2 Morgantown in the first, making it stick in a 62-45 victory over the Mohigans in the Class AAAA state championship game in the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center.
The Timberwolves’ defense proved suffocating all night as they held the Mohigans to 12-of-51 shooting (23.5 percent) from the floor. As a team Spring Valley made Morgantown one-dimensional with the Mohigans hoisting 28 3-pointers and scoring only eight points in the paint.
By comparison Spring Valley was efficient, nailing almost 50 percent (23-of-47) of its attempts and scoring 34 points in the paint.
Leading the charge was guard Sophi Hutchison who netted 24 points on 10-of-16 shooting while Brooklyn Ellis (13) and Allie Daniels (12) joined her in double figures. Daniels added 16 rebounds in the win.
Tatum Devries led Morgantown with 16 points in the loss and was the only Mohigan to shoot at least 50 percent (4-of-8) from the field.
