Charleston – After Brayden Cover held Wyoming East to just one hit in Wheeling Central’s 10-0 semifinal victory Thursday, Steven Brodegard was tasked with matching that effort.
He nearly did, ultimately yielding just two hits.
Brodegard fanned seven in as many innings, pitching another shutout as the Maroon Knights blanked Philip Barbour 7-0 in the Class AA state championship game Saturday at GoMart Park in Charleston.
The win makes Central the first team since Hurricane in 2019 to pitch shutouts in both of its state tournament games.
The bats backed the effort, producing 11 hits in the victory.
Gary Hatfield highlighted the effort with three hits and three RBI, hitting the only home run to leave the park in the tournament (teammate Luke Tiu hit an inside-the-park home run in the semifinal).
Despite managing just two hits, the Colts worked four walks but ended up standing seven runners on.
Zayne Rosnick and Kade Koroneos joined Hatfield with two hits each. Kale Wolf was the only Colt to reach base twice.
