Multiple sources confirmed to Play Sheet Sports the top three seeds in Class AA Region 3 were decided upon Tuesday morning.
Westside secured the top seed and will host all the way to the state tournament while Wyoming East earned the No. 2 seed. James Monroe was voted the No. 3 seed.
Westside finished with a 6-2 record in regional play, splitting with James Monroe and Wyoming East. Wyoming East finished 8-2, splitting with Westside and falling in its only matchup with James Monroe. James Monroe finished 10-1 in the region with its only loss coming at Westside.
The seeding became a point of contention late last week after the second matchup between Wyoming East and James Monroe, to be played at Wyoming East, was postponed from Thursday to Friday and eventually canceled after Monroe County deemed traveling conditions unsafe.
Efforts were made from multiple teams including Bluefield, Midland Trail and Westside to reschedule games in an effort to see the contest through before seeding was voted upon.
James Monroe head coach Kelly Mann respectfully declined to elaborate on his reasoning on the record, wanting to move past the situation.
Region 3 is the only one with three teams ranked in the top six.
James Monroe came in ranked No. 3 in the final WVSACA Coaches Poll, released Monday afternoon. Westside was ranked No. 5 before upsetting Class AAA No. 2 Shady Spring Monday night while Wyoming East was just behind at No. 6.
The bottom seeds in the region were still undecided upon at the time of publishing but when reached for comment, Mann took a diplomatic approach.
“We’ll play the No. 6 seed and then we’ll go play the No. 2 seed,” Mann said.
