
New season, same result for the locals that have established strong volleyball programs.
Defending Class A state champion Greenbrier West, Class AAA power Shady Spring and Class AAAA Beckley all punched their return tickets to the state tournament with regional victories Monday.
Greenbrier West earned a chance to defend its title with a 3-0 sweep of Mount View, beating the Golden Knights 25-18, 25-17 and 25-12. On the other side of the bracket Sherman swept Montcalm 25-9, 25-11 and 25-8 to claim the other Region 3 slot in the state tournament.
In Raleigh County Shady Spring made quick work of Ripley, sweeping the Vikings for another state tournament berth. The Tigers won 25-22, 25-16 and 25-13.
In Beckley the Flying Eagles rolled over Parkersburg South 3-1.
In Class AA Bluefield eliminated Midland Trail 3-1 before falling 3-0 (25-21, 25-22 and 25-13) to Liberty.
The Raiders will now face James Monroe in Lindside on Wednesday with a spot in the Class AA state tournament on the line.
The state tournament will take place Nov. 11-13 at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center.
