Montcalm –
Team: Montcalm
2024 Recap
After back to back 8-2 seasons in 2022 and ’23, Montcalm finished 6-4 in 2024, missing the postseason.
The 2024 campaign brought an end to the winningest senior class in school history and brought to a close the careers of standouts such as QB Jaylen Younger and wide receivers Tristan Cline.
2025 Outlook
Replacing Younger and Cline will be a monumental task. Not only were the two winners, they were producers. Younger threw for 2,125 yards and 22 touchdowns while Cline accounted for 948 yards and 11 touchdowns, both the second-best totals in the area.
“Both of those pieces were really important to us,” head coach Adam Havens said. “We tried to bring along some younger guys last year to fill those roles. We may not get the productions from one person like we did Tristan last year but we think we can do it by committee and produce that way.”
Replacing Younger at QB will be Landin Clower who attempted six passes last year, competing three for 28 yards.
“Landin’s taking the reins and he’s been patient, waiting his turn,” Havens said. “He has a great understanding of the offense and what we’re trying to do. He maybe doesn’t have quite the arm Jaylen did but he makes really good decisions and gets the ball where it’s supposed to go almost every play o we’re really excited to see what he can do behind center.”
Havens is confident in the group of receivers that will complement Cline with some familiar faces returning as well as some older ones.
“Donovan Reed is coming on and he’s playing for the first time in awhile,” Havens said. “He’s a junior and hasn’t played for a very long time but he’s athletic, quick off the ball and he has great hands. We look for him to develop and put up some numbers as the year goes on. We also have B.J. Allen and Dylan Thomason who will play that inside slot receiver spot for us. They got some game experience last year and then Jordan Price is another guy. We think he will benefit with defenses giving the other guys extra attention. He’s pretty speedy so if we can get him the ball in space he has some big-play potential.”
Primarily a passing team over this recent run, Havens is hoping to incorporate more of the ground game to balance the game plan.
“We’ve tired to find a few ways to be more balanced. We have a really good running back in Tyler Stevenson,” Havens said. “He’s patient and our line has done a good job of protection and opening holes for him. We’ve been able to do things in the run game maybe we haven’t been able to do in the past. But ultimately we do plan on spreading it out as much as possible to get the ball in space.”
Montcalm’s schedule has changed significantly with the losses of River View, Buffalo and Paden City. Taking their place will be Greenbrier West, Hannan and Eastern Montgomery, Va.
The Generals’ season will begin on Friday, Aug. 29 when they travel to Craig County.
