2024 Recap
Dropping to Class AAA due to a Board of Review decision in late August, Oak Hill experienced one of the most successful seasons in program history under second-year head coach Davon Marion, going 9-1 in the regular season and hosting a playoff game. The Red Devils defeated Lewis County 27-6 in the opening round of the playoffs before falling 56-14 to eventual state runner-up Herbert Hoover in the Class AAA quarterfinals.
The loss concluded the careers of standouts such as QB Devin Richardson, running back J.D. Mauritz and lineman Brandon Champion.
2025 Outlook
With the legal challenges that impacted the 2024 season in the rearview mirror, Oak Hill will now play in Class AAAA as 0ne of the smallest schools in the classification. Despite that, the Red Devils are 18-3 under Marion and return a plethora of talent.
Luke Endicott will take over at QB, making him the third starting QB Marion has had in his tenure as head coach.
“Luke didn’t play last year but he put on 10 to 15 pounds of muscle this offseason and he’s shown he’s committed so we’re excited to see what he can do.” Marion said.
Endicott will have plenty of support. While Champion is gone, the Red Devils return four starters on the offensive line and skill players Zy Lewis, Carson Treadway, Antoine Hicks, Cade Compton and Owen Grose.
“All four of our starting receivers started games last year for us and have played big in big spots for us,” Marion said. “We lost a lot but we brought back a lot and we’re up for the challenge. We want to prove that we belong with these top tier programs. I think honestly, other than Princeton, if you cut through Charleston and even included Riverside we’ve probably been in that 1-2 mark of area teams and we want to show we belong.”
Treadway is the most productive of the returning skill players. In 2024 he caught 28 passes for 428 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for over 100 yards.
There will be added emphasis on the offensive end for Marion and Co. as they’ve broken the 30-point threshold just three times in 23 games.
“I feel like my first year here, the first spring we had 30 people consistently at weight room,” Marion said. “I felt like they got us a jump. They went from wing-t to spread offense. They were trying to get a jump on it. I think last offseason we kind of fell back from that. Taking some lumps on offense and figuring out what works and what doesn’t work helps. A lot of teams give us different schemes than they give other teams. We’ll watch it back and make adjustments so I feel like we’ve been a good second-half team.”
The Red Devils will also see changes to half their schedule. They’ve swapped Lincoln County, Independence Buckhannon-Upshur, Bluefield and University for Shady Spring, Capital, Hurricane, South Charleston and North Marion.
They’ll open their season on Aug. 29 at home against Nicholas County.
